Interesting Facts About the State of Missouri



Did you know that Missouri has a unique history in geology?  This Website  was once a large prairie with grasslands covering two-thirds of its area. The state's original inhabitants were called the Mound Builders before European Americans arrived. They built earthwork monuments like mounds. Although this state is home to many Native Americans, their descendants fled the state after Europeans arrived.

Missouri voters approved term limits in 1992 for most state offices. The Missouri legislature has two chambers: the senate and the house. Each chamber has its own rules. The Missouri landscape is varied in both topography and climate. The north is characterized by low rolling hills that are influenced glaciation. The south is mountainous with Taum Sauk Mountain at 1,772 feet above the sea level being the highest point. This mountain is located 90 miles from St. Louis. The Ozark Mountains are mountainous but the area south of Missouri River is relatively flat. This is due to the Mississippi River alluvial plain.



During the early nineteenth century, Missouri's population grew by more than double. Most new comers were Americans, but a large number of German and Irish immigrants arrived in the late 1840s and early 1850s. The prospect of freedom from oppression or famine attracted many Irish and German immigrants to Missouri. Unlike European and African immigrants, however, these individuals did not support slavery.
